ATLAS OF WORLD 1890 (Part 1)

A guide to ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND places

PREFACE.
THIS HIS Work has been designed with the object of supplying the Public with a thoroughly complete and accurate Atlas of Modern Geography, in a convenient reference form, and at a moderate price.
The requirements of such an Atlas have been carefully considered, not only from a national point of view, but also with regard to the wants of the student, the man of business, and the general reader. Perhaps the most characteristic feature of the Atlas is, that a much larger number of maps has been devoted to the British Empire. and the United States than is given in any other modern English Atlas. In the mapping of the British Empire, no less than eighteen plates are devoted to the United Kingdom alone ; these have been reduced from the new Ordnance Survey to a uniform scale of ten miles to an inch, and exhibit the topography of the countries in considerable
detail. India is completed in five plates, which have been specially reduced from the Ordnance Survey, and the geographical nomenclature made uniform with Sir W. W. Hunter's Gazetteer of India, every place in that standard work being shown on the maps . The Dominion of Canada is very completely represented in seven plates, newly prepared from the Land Office maps and from other recent authorities . In Australia, Oceania, Africa, and other parts of the world, the mapping of British Possessions has been carried out on the same elaborate scale .
After the British Empire, special prominence has been given to the United States , in whose commercial welfare our country is so much involved, although the adequate mapping of that vast country has, hitherto, been much neglected in English Atlases. The other countries of the World have been treated throughout in as great comprehensiveness and detail as the limits of a General Atlas admit. In the preparation of the maps no pains have been spared to ensure accuracy of geographical data by reference to the original and most authentic sources . New railways, changes of political boundaries , new towns, the results of recent exploration and geographical research, have all been added before going to press.
With the view of completing the general usefulness of the Work for geographical reference some Special Maps have been included in order to illustrate the leading features of Physical and Commercial Geography.
The extensive General Reference Index at the end of the Atlas comprises the names of 100,000 places contained in the maps : for British names it is the most complete yet published .

This Almanac, a regular publishing for many years, was a narrative on life in our country four hundred years ago. The snippet below supplies the prognostication for the year 1739. Not much has changed.

Having consider'd the infinite abuses arising from the false prognostications published among you, made under the shadow of a pot of drink, or, so, I have here calculated one of the most sure and unerring that ever was seen in black and white, as hereafter you ' ll find. For doubtless it is a heinous, foul, and crying sin, to deceive the poor gaping world, greedy of the knowledge of futurity as we Americans all are.
Take notice by the by, that having been at a great deal of pains in the calculation, if you
don't believe every syllable, jot and tittle of it, you do me a great deal of wrong; for which either here or elsewhere, you may chance to be claw'd off ...
